Signs a Handmade Teapot Is High Quality for Everyday Use

A good teapot feels resolved the moment you pick it up. The handle isn’t just comfortable in isolation, it lines up naturally with the spout and the center of the body so that when you tilt your wrist, the pour begins without adjustment. With a well-made pot, you don’t correct your grip mid-pour. The balance holds. Water leaves in a clean, steady stream, neither too thin nor collapsing into drips. When you stop, it stops. No after-dribble running down the spout and onto the body.

Spout work is often where you can tell if the maker really understands use. The angle, the cut of the lip, and the internal filter all come together here. Even a beautiful pot can be frustrating if the stream breaks or sprays when you pour quickly, which happens often in gongfu brewing when timing matters. Some pots look fine when empty but behave poorly once filled with leaves. A good one stays consistent across multiple infusions, even when the leaves have opened and press against the filter.

The lid is another quiet test. It should settle into place with a slight resistance, not loose, not jammed. When you pour and cover the lid hole with your finger, the stream should stop cleanly. That tells you the fit is precise. You’ll also notice the sound. A thin, slightly dry click when the lid seats can tell you more than visual inspection. Over time, that contact surface wears in subtly, and the movement becomes smoother without ever feeling sloppy.

Material plays its part, but not in a vague “this clay is better” sense. With Yixing clay, for example, the quality shows in how the surface feels dry but not chalky, and how it warms in the hand. Thin-walled pots respond quickly to heat, which suits greener oolongs or lighter teas, while thicker walls hold temperature for darker, more robust leaves. But thickness has to be even. If the base is heavy and the walls thin, the heat distribution becomes uneven, and you’ll feel it in the way the liquor develops across short infusions.

There’s also the way the clay or porcelain changes with use. Unglazed clay picks up a soft sheen where fingers rest, especially around the lid knob and handle. It’s not something you notice in a week, but after months of regular brewing, the pot feels less raw. That change is subtle but tied directly to use, not display. A pot that sits on a shelf stays stiff in a way.

Inside the pot, the finish matters just as much as the outside. Run a finger along the interior if you can. It should feel continuous, without gritty patches or uneven trimming marks that catch leaves. The filter holes or ball filter should be cleanly cut, not ragged. These details affect how easily leaves can expand and how cleanly the liquor pours out without clogging.

There’s also a practical side people sometimes overlook. A very refined, thin pot can be a pleasure to use but also more fragile, especially with repeated heating and cooling. A slightly sturdier pot might not look as delicate but can become the one you reach for every day because you don’t worry about it. Quality isn’t always about fineness alone. It’s about how well the object holds up to being used the way tea is actually brewed, rinsed, and handled.

You start to notice these things when you brew the same tea in different pots. One pot will make you slow down slightly because the pour is so controlled. Another might rush you because you’re managing drips or adjusting the lid. Over time, the better pot disappears into the process. Your attention stays on the leaves, the timing, the aroma rising from the cup, instead of the mechanics of the vessel.

That, more than anything, is what separates a well-made teapot from one that only looks the part. It doesn’t ask for attention, but it holds up under it.
