If you come to it from gongfu brewing, the first thing you notice is the interruption inside. Instead of an open interior where leaves can move freely, there is a perforated wall or a fitted basket near the spout. It changes how the leaves expand. Rolled oolong still opens, but not quite as evenly. Long, wiry leaves press against the barrier and tangle there. You can feel it in the pour. A fully open Yixing pot gives a clean, fast stream when the lid is seated well and the spout is aligned. With an internal filter, the flow has a slight hesitation, a soft drag, especially if the holes are fine or the leaves are broken small.
That said, the convenience is real. If you are brewing alone, or at a desk, or making tea for a couple of people without setting out a fairness pitcher and strainer, the built-in infuser simplifies things. You can pour directly into cups without worrying about leaves slipping through. Cleanup is more contained too. You tip the pot, tap out the spent leaves, rinse, and you are mostly done. With a fully open pot, leaves cling to the inner walls and the spout, and you end up fishing them out with a bit more care.
The clay itself still matters, even with that added structure. Unglazed clay has a dry, almost chalky feel when new, and over time it softens under the hand. Oils from tea and handling build a faint sheen. It is not something you notice in a day or even a week, but after months the surface looks less raw. The pot warms differently than porcelain. Heat spreads more slowly, and it holds it in a steady way that suits darker oolongs or shu pu’er. If the walls are a bit thick, the tea stays hot between pours, which can be helpful or a bit heavy-handed depending on what you are brewing.
The lid fit becomes more important than people expect. With a standard clay pot, a well-fitted lid gives you that slight resistance when you press it down and a clean, uninterrupted stream when you cover the air hole. Add an internal infuser, and any weakness in the seal shows up faster. The pour can sputter if the airflow is uneven, or if the leaves clog near the spout opening behind the filter. You find yourself adjusting the angle more carefully, listening for that smooth, continuous sound of water leaving the pot.
There is also a small shift in how you handle the leaves. In an open pot, you can swirl them, tap the side, encourage them to settle. With a fixed infuser, you rely more on how you load the tea at the start. If you pack it too tightly into the basket or against the perforated wall, the first infusion can come out thin while the inner leaves lag behind. A looser hand helps. Let the leaves have some room, even within that constraint.
Visually, these pots are often a bit more straightforward. The added interior complexity discourages very thin walls or extremely small forms. You see slightly thicker bodies, more generous openings so the filter can be cleaned. The spout is sometimes a touch wider to compensate for the restriction inside. When it is done well, none of this feels clumsy. The pot still sits comfortably in the hand, the handle gives enough space for your fingers, and the balance holds when you tilt it. When it is not, the weight shifts forward and the pour feels like it wants to drop out of your grip.
What I end up noticing most is when I reach for it without thinking. Not for a focused tasting, where I want full control and an open interior, but for the in-between moments. A handful of leaves, a quick rinse, a few cups poured without arranging a full tray. The clay still warms the hands, still softens the water a little, still carries that quiet accumulation of use. The infuser just changes the rhythm. It trims a few steps, adds a small barrier inside, and asks you to accept a slightly different conversation with the leaves.
