Tea Pot Name Meanings: How Chinese Teapot Shapes Get Their Names

Take something like “shi piao,” often translated as “stone ladle.” The first time you hear it, it sounds heavier than the pot actually feels. In the hand, a good shi piao is surprisingly balanced. The body sits low and wide, the spout is short, and the handle angles back in a way that makes the pour feel steady even when the pot is nearly empty. The name starts to make sense not because it looks like a ladle, exactly, but because the center of gravity behaves like one. When you tilt it, the weight moves in a controlled, predictable way. That matters more than the image.

Or “xi shi,” named after a figure people recognize from history, but the pot itself is just a round, full shape with a soft lid and a short spout. What you notice is how the lid settles. There’s a slight resistance as it finds its seat, then a clean, almost quiet click. When you pour, the round body keeps heat well, which suits certain oolongs that benefit from a slightly higher, more stable temperature. The name carries a story if you want it, but the usefulness shows up in the second or third infusion, when the leaves open fully and the pot holds its warmth without fuss.

Yixing clay pots complicate names further because the clay itself becomes part of the identity. Two pots with the same shape name can feel completely different if one is made from a denser, finer clay and the other from something more sandy. The denser clay often gives a smoother pour and a slightly sharper lid fit. The sandy one feels drier in the hand, almost chalky at first, and over time it softens as it absorbs oils from repeated use. You start to recognize a pot less by its formal name and more by how it behaves with your tea. One pot seems to round off the edges of a young sheng pu’er, another keeps the aromatics of a dancong more intact. The name doesn’t tell you that. You learn it by brewing.

Some names are more literal. “Fang gu,” “imitation antique,” usually refers to a more upright, slightly squared form. These tend to have thicker walls. When you pour boiling water over the outside to keep the temperature up, the heat lingers. You feel it when you pick it up again. It’s not delicate. It’s a working pot, the kind you don’t worry too much about setting down a bit firmly on a wet tea tray. The lid might not have that tight, almost airtight seal collectors talk about, but it doesn’t need to. It pours cleanly, doesn’t dribble, and the handle doesn’t bite into your fingers.

Names also show up in smaller details. A “straight spout” versus a “three-bend spout” changes how the stream forms. With a well-made three-bend spout, the flow is smooth and slightly arched, which helps when you’re pouring quickly into small cups during gongfu brewing. You don’t have to chase the stream. It lands where you expect. If the spout is even slightly misaligned, you notice it immediately. The tea hits the rim of the cup or splits into two thin streams. No name fixes that.

Over time, the name of a pot fades a bit behind habit. You reach for the same one in the morning without thinking. You know how much leaf it takes by sight, how long you can leave the water in before it starts to over-extract, how the lid feels when it’s hot. The surface changes too. Unglazed clay develops a low sheen, not glossy, but something like worn wood. It’s not something you polish. It comes from rinsing, from tea running over the body, from being handled when it’s warm.

If you stop and think about it, you can still recall the name. It’s useful when you’re talking to someone else, or when you’re trying to understand where a shape comes from. But in daily use, the name sits in the background. What stays in the foreground is the way the pot pours, the way it holds heat, and the small, repeatable motions that make the tea come out the way you like.
